As technology has advanced throughout human history, societies have adapted their way of life to try to incorporate the advantages offered while limiting the consequences. The automobile for example freed people from the limited range and unpredictable nature of the horse, but also created a need for traffic safety laws and research into pollution controls. Similarly with biotechnology and genetic engineering, the promise of curing disease motivates many to continue research, but the demonstrated and potential consequences of genetic abnormalities and eugenic warfare make this technology a power that may not be best left to the creative classes and better kept under close scrutiny if allowed at all. Tonight we discuss this topic in the context of Kevin Davies’ work ‘Editing Humanity’ on the CRISPR gene editing technique with the help of returning guest Corey Mahler from the Stone Choir podcast to offer a Christian perspective on this profoundly human topic with its deep moral implications.
